Why Forge Jazz Camp
With decades of experience teaching and performing, our team of professional instructors is trusted by band directors throughout the Seattle area to inspire and elevate young musicians. We provide a welcoming, collaborative environment where middle and high school students come together to grow their skills, build confidence, and pursue excellence. Whether students are aiming to refine their technique, prepare for auditions, or simply deepen their love of music, our program supports their journey every step of the way—strengthening not only individual musicianship but also the broader school music communities they represent.
What Students Will Do
Middle School - students will focus on building a strong foundation in rhythm, harmony, and listening in a supportive, engaging environment. Through interactive exercises and group playing, they’ll learn core concepts like call and response while becoming familiar with important jazz recordings and styles. Daily ensemble work helps them develop timing, awareness, and confidence, giving them the tools they need to begin improvising and contributing musically with others.
High School - students will spend the duration of the camp immersed in the language of jazz through hands-on playing, listening, and collaboration. They’ll learn solos directly from recordings through guided transcription, strengthening their ears and gaining a deeper understanding of phrasing, harmony, and form. Each day includes small group rehearsals where students apply these ideas in real time, developing improvisational fluency and confidence. Along the way, they’ll explore how jazz vocabulary is built and used, so they can move beyond memorization and start expressing their own musical ideas.
Requirements
Middle School - Students should have some basic experience on their instrument and a willingness to participate in a group setting. No prior jazz experience is required—just an openness to learning, listening, and trying new musical concepts in a supportive environment.
High School - Students should have at least one year of experience on their instrument and be comfortable playing major scales up to three sharps and flats. Prior ensemble experience is important, with at least two years of group playing (or an equivalent level of experience) recommended so students can fully participate in small group rehearsals and improvisation work.
